Lets say you live in a household consisting of two men with two vehicles, a 2009 Volvo C70 (hardtop convertible) and a 2013 Honda CR-Z. How do you transport a two-person kayak without borrowing a friend’s truck, or throwing it over your shoulder and walking it 15 miles to the water?

Get racked.

More importantly, how do you like the CR-Z, because I’m very seriously considering getting one in a couple of years.

Kayak trailer? Custom roof rack?

The C70 is my car, I rarely drive the CR-Z, but he loves it, traded from a 2013 Civic EX and says it feels a lot quicker and more nimble despite the meager performance on paper. Also, its the only Honda with pitiful resale, so you can get them pretty cheap.

Someone else posted a photo of a CR-Z with a roof rack, so I assume thats a possibility.

They are manual, they are hybrid, they are hatch, they are awesome.

When the HEMIWagon is actually completed (it’s going to be a year or two), I’m seriously considering getting a CR-Z as the daily, and not always driving the HEMIWagon. I care not about performance, but manual + hybrid + little is good. Probably the only Honda made in the past 10 years I can honestly say I would seriously consider.

Kidding aside, a small fold-up trailer could work, or put a rack on the CR-Z since its roof doesn’t move. You could also use some foam pads on the closed roof of the Volvo and strap it, but that could potentially hurt the paint or weatherstripping.

I agree with the congregate. Rack the CR-Z. Luckily you have a lot of roof real estate to work with.

Roof rack, but you need to be sure you can get adequate bar separation to support the weight of the tandem boat (the rack specs fitment manual will tell you, at a good shop). Don’t compromise or short the support distance, you can damage the boat. The trailer suggestion is great (though it will be longer than you think), because then you can use either car, with a hitch, and with some creative engineering you can use the trailer to haul all kinds of things without owning or renting a truck.
